Spiti Valley Road Trip: Acclimatization, Packing List & Best Season
Planning a high-altitude expedition across the Middle Land? Complete road trip guide covering Kunzum Pass, Chandratal Lake, homestays in Kaza, and AMS prevention.
Perched at an average altitude of over 12,500 feet, Spiti Valley is a cold desert landscape of barren mountains, thousand-year-old Tibetan monasteries, and turquoise glacier rivers.
Travelling through Spiti is a bucket-list dream, but high altitude requires respect and preparation.
1. The Golden Rule of Acclimatization: Never rush the ascent. Starting from Shimla and ascending gradually through Kalpa and Nako allows your body to produce red blood cells naturally, minimizing Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS).
2. Stay Hydrated: Drink at least 3 to 4 liters of water daily. Avoid alcohol and heavy caffeine on the first few days of the climb.
3. What to Pack for Spiti: Layering is essential. Thermals, windproof fleece jacket, UV protection sunglasses, lip balm, hydration tablets, and high-SPF sunscreen.
4. Key Monasteries & High Villages: Send a postcard from the world’s highest post office in Hikkim (14,567 ft), witness fossil trails in Langza, and visit the iconic 11th-century Key Gompa.
5. Chandratal Lake Experience: Camping near the crescent-shaped Moon Lake under a galaxy of millions of visible stars is an emotional and unforgettable highlight of the journey.
